about this layout: #9
What began with a simple act of boredom, and an attempt to see how I would fair at my first image manipulation, layout number nine has quickly become one of my favorites. You barely have to glance around my websites to find out that I love J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter stories. I will admit that I am a slash (male/male relationship) fiend, for there is no way I could hide this fact. My favorite pairing would have to be Harry/Draco.
The two individual images were donated by a few people who wanted to help me out with some of my projects. Looking at the images, the looks in each character's eyes, I knew that I could do something with them. Part of the image editing was easy. Lining up where I wanted Draco's arm, and Harry's head. Masks are wonderful, and anyone who can truly use Photoshop knows what I am talking about. The hard part started with the edges, particularly Harry's hair (tee-hee). I solved the problem with a dark shadowy outer glow for Harry, and after merging them I applied a white glow around the pair. I have a penchant for perfection, so of course their eyes were corrected. After a few comments from people, I had help noticing the shadows that I missed, and added those. I am very pleased with the image manipulation, and it turned out exactly how I wanted. So, Draco's hand is where I wanted them to be.
It captures the nature of the relationship. A possessive and dominant Draco Malfoy wrapping his arm around an innocent Harry Potter, who wears a doleful expression, while Malfoy keeps his hand in a fist to show how publicly reclusive he is in his emotion. But, the look in Malfoy's eyes say, "Nah nah nah, I have Potter, and you don't! I won't share! Mine!"
In trying to make it into a layout, I was continuously stumped. Without wanting to use masks, or filters, I wanted to preserve the image manipulation, since I did work extremely hard on it. Grey was used, since between the counterpart colours features in Gryffindor and Slytherin, it remains neutral base. Silver is not needed, since it is basically the grey, and of course the other colours are used: burgundy, forest green, and gold. For the text area, I decided to keep it very simple and just used tables when I coded it. The image is the center point, and I wanted to keep it that way. I pulled out quite a few of my patterns for the layout, and they worked out very well. The current version of the layout you are seeing is the second incarnation of the layout. It still isn't my best, I'll probably work on it again some other day. The typography is very simple, just Arial Black and a font called Hannibal. I struggled the toughest on trying to figure out what to do with the navigation. In the end I settled.
I usually give layouts subtitles, and in the recent layouts they have all been from image songs. Layout #9 is entitled Show Me Love, from T.A.T.U.'s song. I realized at the last moment that I didn't give it a title, and thus was prepared to go through all my mp3s (and I have a lot) to find the song. Luckily, it was on my current play list.
All in all, I am very pleased with this layout. I dedicate this layout to two very special people. My writing sister Minks, and my favourite Belgian waffle known as Dragon no Hime.
